Parent organization says voters should elect
a proven leader to stand up for children and support high-quality public schools

The bipartisan Texas Parent PAC today announced its endorsement of former school board member Ed Thompson of Pearland for election as state representative in House District 29. This is the legislative seat held by Randy Weber, who is not seeking re-election.

“Ed Thompson has a deep commitment to public education, and he fully understands that Texas must have top-notch neighborhood schools to prepare our children for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Darci Hubbard, a Texas Parent PAC board of directors member from the Houston area.

House District 29 includes Pearland and Alvin Independent School Districts. Thompson says public education is a passion for his family, as his wife is a former teacher and assistant principal, his daughter is a teacher, and his father-in-law was a teacher and coach in Pasadena.

Over the last 39 years, Thompson has touched the lives of thousands of school-age youth and their families through his weekend work as a high school football referee. He views refereeing as an opportunity for teaching young people about determination in competitive athletics, sportsmanship, right and wrong, and courage in adversity.

While many people in Pearland know Thompson as their State Farm agent, he also has a long history of leadership and service to his community and region. Most recently, he was Mayor Pro Tem and a member of the Pearland City Council.

Thompson has helped implement a job creation environment as past chairman of the Pearland Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Economic Development Corporation.

A native of La Porte, Thompson graduated from La Porte High School and the University of Houston, where he earned a degree in finance. Thompson and his wife, Freddie, have two children and four grandchildren. They are active members in Sagemont Church.

Carolyn Boyle of Austin, Texas Parent PAC chair, said Thompson has exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills that will help him to be very effective in the Texas House of Representatives. “All the parents who meet Ed Thompson feel like he is a true statesman –someone who can be trusted to speak for families and do what is right.”

Texas Parent PAC was created by parents in 2005 with the goal of electing more state leaders who will consistently stand up for public education. The political action committee has helped elect 23 new members of the Texas Legislature. More than 1,100 families, business leaders, and public school supporters have contributed to support the PAC’s grassroots campaign efforts.

In the 2012 primary election, Texas Parent PAC is endorsing more than 25 candidates statewide. The parent organization describes its endorsed candidates as “men and women of integrity, open and responsive to parents, actively involved in their communities, and committed to investing in public education to achieve economic prosperity in Texas.”

The Texas Hospital Association’s state political action committee, HOSPAC, has endorsed Ed Thompson, Republican, for Texas House District 29. One of the largest hospital associations in the country, THA represents more than 85 percent of the state’s hospitals and health care systems, which employ some 369,000 health care professionals statewide.

“Texas hospitals face numerous challenges in delivering care to our diverse, fast-growing population,” said John Hawkins, senior vice president of Advocacy and Public Policy for THA. “HOSPAC has endorsed candidates who recognize the importance of health care to all Texans, and value the role that hospitals play in caring for our communities as well as their significant contributions to the state’s economy.”

“Hospitals are major employers in the state, and workforce needs continue to grow as demand for services increases, especially among the elderly,” said Hawkins. “Sound health care policies will be more important than ever, and Ed Thompson has indicated a willingness to work with Texas hospitals to address health care issues.”

“House District 29 families not only rely on hospitals for excellent care, but the jobs and economic strength that come with having so many hospitals in our part of Texas. The rapid growth experienced by our region in the last three decades is a direct result of the outstanding care provided by our area’s hospitals,” Thompson said of the endorsement. “I look forward to working with the Texas Hospital Association to address the health care needs of Texans.”

Texas’ most influential association pledges its support The Texas Association of Realtors today announced its decision to endorse Ed Thompson [...]

Texas’ most influential association pledges its support

The Texas Association of Realtors today announced its decision to endorse Ed Thompson in his election to the Texas House to represent District 29. Making the statement last week, Chairman Joe Stewart applauded Thompson’s commitment to Texas homeowners.

“The next legislative session will be filled with difficult decisions,” said Stewart. “That’s why we need lawmakers like Thompson who understand the critical role homeowners play in keeping our state prosperous, which is why we’ve pledged our full support.”

Texas is leading the nation’s economic recovery, due in large part to its strong real estate market. To maintain that momentum, Texas’ lawmakers must understand homeowners’ concerns and act to bolster homeownership in the state and supporting those efforts is the association’s top priority this election season. Through the candidate interview process of the Texas Association of Realtors, Ed Thompson clearly showed a command of issues critical to sustaining our Texas economy, as well as the needs and challenges our fast-growing state will encounter at the Legislature in the future.

Thompson said, “It is an honor to have the endorsement of the Texas Association of Realtors, which represents thousands of small business owners throughout the state and here in District 29. I look forward to working with them to make homeownership more affordable for Texans.”

As one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the state, the Texas Association of Realtors expects to be a considerable grassroots force for Ed Thompson.

Texas Realtors have championed a number of legislative issues enhancing the lives of Texans, such as urging reforms to the property appraisal system in 2011 and 2009, preventing a tax of $600 or more on the personal vehicles of independent Texans in 2007 and advocating for billions in property tax reductions in 2005. To learn more about Texas Realtors’ legislative advocacy on behalf of its members and homeowners, visit TexasRealEstate.com.

About the Texas Association of REALTORS®
With approximately 80,000 members, the Texas Association of REALTORS® is a professional membership organization that represents all aspects of real estate in Texas. We advocate on behalf of Texas REALTORS® and private-property owners to keep homeownership affordable, protect private-property rights, and promote public policies that benefit homeowners.
